Being so close to the Washington D.C. metro area, Clifton and Centreville Virginia residents have a uniquely close tie to President’s Day, aka Washington’s Birthday. Maybe your outdoor deck is covered in snow and you are running out of ideas to keep the winter doldrums at bay. Time to think outside the deck!
Presidents’ Day weekend is a great time to visit Washington, DC and pay tribute to America’spast leaders. The national holiday, Presidents’ Day, was originally a commemoration of George Washington’s birthday (February 22, 1732). After Washington’s death, our nation began celebrating his birthday as a way to remember his life. After Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, America began celebrating Lincoln’s birthday on February 12th. In 1971, President Richard Nixon combined the two holidays into one and ever since we have honored all past presidents on the third Monday of February. Special festivities are held in the Washington D.C. area throughout the weekend, many with free admission.
If a road trip isn’t out of the question, think about hitting up the George Washington Birthday Parade in Alexandria, VA. This parade in Old Town Alexandria is “The largest Parade Celebrating Washington’s Birthday in the USA!” The parade dates back to at least 1923 and features bands, floats, wagons, horses, historic reenactment units, youth groups, and special performances. As long as you’ve made the drive to Alexandria, think about hitting up some of historic sites around town. Many offer free admission on President’s Day. Another road trip destination is Washington’s home in Mount Vernon. Explore the 500-acre estate and to learn more about the first President of the United States with special events throughout the weekend.
Hopefully the fun activities will get you through the winter blues and looking forward to spring and all the fun activities you can enjoy on your custom built deck as the snows melt.
